It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Herman Wendel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on March 3, 2025, in Beaver, Ohio, just a week after the loss of his devoted wife, Doris (Fuller) Wendel. Born on June 5, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, to Herman and Sarah Marie (Goegelein) Wendel, Robert lived a rich and fulfilling life, filled with love, labor, and a deep appreciation for family and the natural world.
Robert, affectionately known as Bob, was preceded in death by his cherished wife Doris, who was his partner in every sense for nearly 75 years. They built a life together founded on love, support, and mutual understanding. Bob's dedication to Doris was evident in every aspect of their lives; he devoted himself to ensuring her needs were met, creating a bond that reflected the kind of love that many only dream of.
In addition to his wife, Doris, Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Sarah Wendel, his brother George Wendel, and two sons, Thomas Herman and Steven Jay Wendel. He leaves behind a loving family, including his sister Barbara Ann (Wendel) Hallsteine, brother Donald Wendel, granddaughters Samantha (Steven) Eden and Taylor Wendel, grandsons Daniel (Samantha) Wendel, Steven Likens, and Jay Wendel, as well as many great-grandchildren and a long list of extended family and lifelong friends. His family was quietly his pride and joy, as a man of few words at times, and he took great delight in sharing stories and wisdom with those he loved.
Bob served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1952, a time that shaped the character of the man he would become. Following his military service, he embarked on a fulfilling career as a professional painter in his early years before transitioning into a dedicated woodworker. Bob's craftsmanship was celebrated; he specialized in creating beautiful furniture, cabinetry, and decorative builds that will be cherished for generations.
A true lover of nature, Bob found joy in living on his tree farm in Beaver, Ohio, where he spent countless hours tending to the land, preparing trees for his sawmill, watching birds. and passionately discussing the property that brought him so much happiness. Bob was also known for his impressive collection of various items, each with its own story and historical significance. Visitors to his home could always expect to engage in lengthy and meaningful conversations about his collections, as he took great pride in sharing his knowledge and love for these treasures.
Bob's guidance, with a hint of tough love, touched the lives of many. Up until the very end, he remained a devoted caregiver to Doris, whose passing just prior left a permanent mark on his heart. The wisdom and knowledge he imparted to his family and friends will resonate for years to come, reminding us of the treasure that Bob was to all who knew him. Robert Herman Wendel will be profoundly missed. His love, kindness, and the stories he shared will forever remain in our hearts.
A private graveside service will be held at a future date at the Beaver Union Cemetery, where we will celebrate Bob's remarkable life and the legacy he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Heartland Hospice Memorial online at (www.gentivahs.com) or to the Ohio Forestry Association in honor of Robert's love for trees at (www.ohioforest.org/page/Foundation).
