Lorine Prater Obituary

Lorine Knipp Holbrook Prater, 94, returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Her devotion to her family and her faith in Jesus Christ supported her through many struggles in life, and ultimately gave her peace as she departed this world. Lorine was born to the late Samuel Logan and Mattie Marie (Blevins) Knipp in Raceland, Greenup County, Kentucky on July 30, 1923. She dedicated her life to Christ and joined Beaver Valley United Baptist Church in 1966. She regularly visited Bethel Ridge Baptist Church, and was known for her singing and song writing. Lorine was a wonderful cook, especially renowned for her dumplings, gravy and biscuits, and chocolate pies. Lorine was blessed with a large and loving family. She married her true love, William "Speck" Holbrook, on October 5, 1938 in Greenup, Kentucky. Together, they raised six children with patience, love, and humility. She was an artist at heart and loved music and art. She was kind hearted, soft-spoken, and always took the opportunity to help someone in need, no matter how big or small. She will be deeply missed by so many. Lorine was preceded in death by her husband, Speck Holbrook in 1980, and by her second husband, EP Prater in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Lucille Knipp Hall, and two brothers, Harold Knipp and Carl Knipp, daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Pennington) Holbrook, and a granddaughter, Julia Belle Miller. Lorine is survived by six children: Roger Holbrook of Jackson, Lee (Jesse) Pennington, Melissa (David) Miller, Rob (Cathy) Holbrook, Joe (Mary) Holbrook, John Holbrook, and special family member, Diannah Holbrook, all from Beaver, Ohio, 23 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Phyllis (Bob) Ross of Ashland, Kentucky, and hosts of nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones. Lorine lived nearly 95 years on this earth. Being with her family is what she cherished most. She experienced much joy and peace, and her share of pain and heartache. She overcame illnesses on many occasions. Yet, through it all, her faith in Christ and love for her family remained her focus. Her perseverance through adversity is a powerful lesson for us, and a legacy for us to pass on for generations. A celebration of Lorine's life will begin Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm with visitation and a wake, followed by a memorial service on Wednesday at 1:00 pm with Bro. Arvil Murray, Bro. Jeff Conley, and Bro. Charles Knipp officiating. Both visitation and funeral will be held at Beaver Valley United Baptist Church, 148 Tile Mill Road, Beaver, Ohio, 45613. Burial in Hannah Cemetery, Cove Road, Jackson, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cox Burkitt Funeral Home in Beaver, Ohio.
