Ernestine Overly Obituary

  Ernestine Overly, aged 78, of Beaver, passed into her heavenly reward on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.   She was born on March 23, 1939 in the coal mining community of Lackey, Kentucky the daughter of Jasper Lee and Versie Thornsberry Compton.  She attended the local graded schools including Maytown and Wilson Creek Schools in Floyd County.   As a young girl her parents moved from Kentucky to Beaver in Pike County OH.   She graduated from Beaver High School in 1957.   On June 13, 1959 she married Donald Roger Overly.  Ernie and Roger became the parents of three children.  After her children began school she began working as an aide at Pike County Hospital in Waverly.   While working full time she attended Shawnee State College where she received an Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy.   She spent the remainder of her working career as a certified Respiratory Therapist helping scores of patients in their time of need. Ernie was active in several civic and religious endeavors.   As a young mother she was a leader in the Girl Scouts.   In 1974 she became one of the founding members of the Pike County Emergency Medical System and served as an EMT on Beaver Squad Three.  Over her life she was a member of the Beaver Civic Club, the Beaver Valley Historical Society, and the Beaver High School Alumni Association.   She was a long-time member of Beaver Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she served numerous positions and with various ministries. Ernie is survived by her husband of 58 years and three children: Angela J. Hamilton of Portsmouth, Vicki L. (Brian) Richard of Lucasville, and D. Bruce (Cheryl) Overly of Beaver.   She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Erin Stuart, Kelly Turner, Bethany Anderson, Evan Richard, Emily Richard, Hannah Overly, Abbigail Overly and Jacob Overly.   She was also the proud grandmother of six great grandchildren: Carson and Connor Stuart, Brooklyn and Braelyn Turner, and Parker and Ava Anderson.  She is also survived by two brothers: Jim (Connie) Compton of Oak Harbor WA, Rodney Compton of Peebles OH; two sisters: Glenna (Harold) Gregory of Gray, TN and Bonnie (Kenny) Rider of Peebles OH; and a sister-in-law Sharon Compton of Beaver.   She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Roger L. Compton. Ernestine will be laid to eternal rest in Beaver Union Cemetery.  Service will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday February 13, 2018 at Beaver Emmanuel United Methodist Church.  Services will be officiated by Reverends Herman Stewart and Chris Clark.  Visitation will be held on Monday February 12, 2018 at the Cox Burkitt Funeral Home in Beaver, Ohio from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  Should friends wish they may make memorial donations to the Southern Ohio Medical Center Breast Cancer Compassion Fund at 1121 Kinneys Lane, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
